Sometimes the bloggy world gets suddenly quite small.
A scrapbooker and photographer whose blog I've read and admired for some time, Kathy Thompson, recently joined my local Scrapbooking Forum. Until then, I hadn't even realized that she was a fellow Maritimer! (Though I should have. Duh.)
But then--wait for it--someone suggested that we beg Kathy to teach a photography class sometime. The owner of the store jumped on it right away, and almost before I'd had time to imagine how great that would be, it was happening!
So, starting today, I'm embarking on a brand-spanking new adventure--my very first photography class! So exciting! You can follow along somewhat, as I'll be creating an album to share my photo assignments here. I have my first assignment already, but I also have a horribly overcast day. The weatherman promised sun for the afternoon, so I'm holding out a bit in hopes of better light before uploading anything.
I've already learned from the lesson though, without ever picking up the camera. Kathy posted a series of photos to outline the assignment and asked us which one we liked best. No problem! I know what I like and had instantly been drawn to one photo. But she also asked us WHY? And I realized that I had no idea. None. I just liked it, ok? I feel like I'm back in elementary school, and I kind of like the feeling, the struggle to find vocabulary to describe emotion, to convince and explain what is known but never understood. THIS is why I was a total school geek. Anyway, chances are good that my inability to identify what makes me like one photo more than another is the same thing blocking me from creating the shots I admire in others. I'm hoping that figuring it out will go a long way to opening me up to the next level in my photography.
So a question for you--do you know WHY you like one piece of art more than another? How did you learn to identify it? If you know what you like, can you achieve a similar feel in your own art?
And for the scrapbookers that drop by, I KNOW, I KNOW. My desk misses me. I need to get photos printed. If you're looking for a scrapping fix, go check out Kathy's blog. She's AMAZING.
***UPDATE: New album in the sidebar with each day's assignment (plus bonus photos if I really like them!). Enjoy!
