I have been mentally writing this post for a while, and when Big Mama announced that she was throwing a Fashion Fiesta...well, I knew I had to save it for today. Big Mama asked us to share our fashion secrets, to bare our closet's souls, to answer "What do you wear on a daily basis? What’s your uniform? What piece of clothing can you not live without?"
What piece of clothing can I not live without?
Oh, I'm so glad you asked!
To my faithful friend:
I danced towards you
Displayed as part of a travelling sale.
You fit so very comfortably
and entered my life as I was
growing desperate for a raincoat.
Price? $20. Perfect.
I felt sassy and trendy
blending now with my fellow students.
A sea of yellow on grey days;
warm, dry and brilliant.
You were always faithful
standing up to every test.
Spring, summer, fall, winter
(and winter in canada
is nothing to joke about).
We went everywhere together;
from business in the city
to wilderness canoe trips,
student to employee,
single to married to mother.
Over time though
the compliments dwindled
your brilliant yellow became
scuffed, worn and grey.
Even after washing.
It hurt my heart,
but it was time to say goodbye.
I began looking elsewhere
for appropriate outerwear.
Only to be denied.
It's true--there's no one like you.
Roomy in the shoulders,
waterproof but breathable.
So we continue onward
comfort, practicality and sentimentality.
Ignore the frowning fashionistas.
What do they know?
Seriously? Fashion friends who followed the linky? This coat is perfection, but I have had (and loved) it for over a decade. It's time for a grown up (and less worn out) coat. Let's review the selling points of the old coat first:
Elastic wrists so water/snow doesn't go down your arm every time you move? Check.
Long enough (mid-thigh) to keep my hiney warm and dry no matter what activity I'm doing? Check.
Pockets to keep mommy detrius contained? Check.
Enough air flow to keep cool in summer rain storms but heavy enough to block an arctic wind? Check.
Did I mention COMPLETELY waterproof? Checked-y check check!
I'm leaning towards something like this or this for winter, but when I tried on similar coats at the mall they were all WAY too tight in the shoulders and short in the arms. Similarly, I'm leaning towards this, this, or this for spring/summer. I don't think realistically that I'll contine to get away with an all season coat. Though I can dream.
Oh, and let's keep it in the under $150 range ok? Gotta feed the kids...
Anyone want to point me in a good coat direction? If you shop online, how do you know you're getting a good fit?
Sweetpea just appeared over my shoulder and wants me to get this. Cute, but SO not me!
And whoops! I just noticed that I put in a picture of the fiesta button instead of the actual button. If you're looking to go back to the rest of the fiesta, go HERE
